Swedish star Tekie joins Fortuna

Sweden international Tesfaldet Tekie has joined Eredivisie strugglers Fortuna Sittard on a free transfer.

The 22-year-old midfielder has signed a two-year deal with the option of a further season.

Tekie told the club’s official website: “Fortuna Sittard focuses on developing young players and that appeals to me. I look forward to being on the pitch with the staff and my new team-mates.”

Sjoerd Ars, the club’s technical manager, added: “With Tekie we brought in a technically very skilled midfielder with an enormous running capacity. He also has a fantastic pass.

“Despite the interest of other clubs, we have been able to convince Tesfaldet to choose Fortuna Sittard. Despite his young age, he has already gained the necessary experience, including an international match for Sweden.”

Tekie played in the Europa League last season on loan at Ostersund and won his first cap for his country against Iceland in January.

Having been released by Belgian side Gent earlier this month, he joins a club second bottom of the Eredivisie table. They return to action on Sunday at home to FC Twente.
