ADO Den Haag have snapped up free agent midfielder Thom Haye on a two-year deal.

The 24-year-old has been brought in by the Eredivisie club after his contract was cancelled by Italian outfit Lecce in the summer.

Haye has plenty of experience in the Netherlands after playing for Willem II and AZ Alkmaar previously. He was heavily linked with a move to Denmark before ADO Den Haag came in for him.

Haye has made 121 appearances in the Eredivisie for his previous clubs, scoring six times, but was used sparsely by Lecce last season, playing just 15 times in total without finding the back of the net.

ADO were on the lookout for a replacement for Nasser El Khayati, who left for Qatar last month, and Haye will slot into the middle of the park, probably in a playmaker role, but he does sometimes operate as a second striker.

He will hope to make his debut this weekend if he is registered in time when Alfons Groenendijk’s side, who are 11th in the table after two wins and three defeats so far, go to Feyenoord on Sunday.

Haye will be keen to kick-start his career after a frustrating time in Italy. He was highly rated as a youngster when representing Holland from Under-17 to Under-21 level although he has yet to feature in a full international match for his country.

ADO sporting director Jeffrey van As says Haye can be a key player this season, telling the club’s website: “We are happy that we were able to capture Thom after the market closed.

“He adds creativity and dynamism to our midfield. Thom is a player who can be an important pivot but can also form a good link between midfield and the attack. With this last transfer, competition within the team has increased somewhat.”
