Veltman admits Hammers interest

West Ham target Joel Veltman has confirmed he is open to leaving Ajax and there is interest - but nothing concrete yet.

Defender Joel Veltman has admitted that West Ham United were keen to sign him during the summer transfer window but Ajax prevented him from leaving.

The 27-year-old has played his entire professional career with the Amsterdam giants, making 208 appearances in all competitions.

However, it seems as though he was keen to try his luck elsewhere, with the Hammers linked with a swoop during the off-season.

Although the possibility of the versatile stopper moving to the London Stadium did not get too much attention in the press, it appears as though the Hammers threw their hat into the ring only to be given short shrift by the powers that be in Holland.

“Everyone knows that I would like to play abroad again,” he told NOS. “West Ham United were interested, but there were more clubs. However, Ajax put a stop to it. I wasn’t allowed to leave.”

Capped 19 times by the Netherlands, Veltman has been a one-club man to date but it seems as though he does not want that situation to continue and confessed that 2019 was not the only year in which he sought an Ajax exit.

“I also wanted to leave in 2018, but then I got injured,” he added. “I started my eighteenth season here, but I’m still good, though.”

The right-back has started three of Ajax’s four Eredivisie matches so far this term and they clearly do not want him to leave any time soon.

They take on Heerenveen at the Johan Cruijff Arena on Saturday.
