Ajax teen Dest set for Dutch call-up talks

Ajax’s Sergino Dest was delighted to make his USA debut against Mexico but feels he still has much to learn.

Ajax right-back Sergino Dest is poised to hold talks with the KNVB about switching to play his international football for the Netherlands.

The highly-rated 18-year-old has made eight appearances in all competitions for the Ajax first team this season.

As a result of Dest’s progress at the Johan Cruyff ArenA, he was handed a call-up to the United States national team earlier this month and played in friendlies against Mexico and Uruguay.

As he has not played a competitive fixture for the USA, he is able to switch allegiance and the Dutch authorities are keen for him to play for the Oranje.

Ronald Koeman’s side have European Championship qualifiers against Northern Ireland and Belarus coming up in October and they will have to secure a quick decision from Dest who is also likely to be called up by the USA.

Gregg Berhalter’s side have competitive CONCACAF nations League games against Cuba and Canada so, if Dest plays in those fixtures, the door will be closed on a future with the Netherlands.
