The Ukrainian is currently on a season-long loan from Manchester City, having been sent to the Philips Stadion to gain experience after joining from Russian club Ufa in July.
Having played in a number of attacking roles already in his career, the 19-year-old has featured mainly as a winger in the Eredivisie.
Cocu says he does eventually envisage using Zinchenko centrally but for now believes it is better for both the player and the team for him to play out wide.
“It is a multipurpose player who in his career already as false striker, hanging on the side and sometimes played as number 10,” he said.
“He will eventually end up in midfield, but at this stage of his development, I think he’s playing more often on the side in a role that suits him.”
