The striker played for the Amsterdam giants between 2006 and 2008 and has since enjoyed spells at the likes of Real Madrid, AC Milan and Schalke.
However, with his contract in Gelsenkirchen set to expire at the end of the season, doubts remain over whether he will be staying in Germany or choose to move on in the summer.
At 33 years old, he could look to return to the Netherlands for what is likely to be the final move of his career and the likely European football on offer at Ajax would make them an attractive prospect.
Overmars admits the club would be interested in the deal, as he still feels Huntelaar can still add something to the side.
He told De Telegraaf: "Huntelaar is still interesting for us, he's a real winner. Such guys we need. I'm not saying we're going to get him, but we will look at his situation closely."
