Weghorst sets scoring target

AZ Alkmaar's Wout Weghorst says he wants to reach 20 goals this season after continuing his impressive start to the season on Friday.

Lining up for the fifth consecutive time in the league this term away at Sparta Rotterdam, Weghorst produced a match-winning performance to help his side pick up their fourth win of the campaign.

The former Holland Under-21 international scored both goals in the 2-0 win – his fifth and sixth strikes of the season – and it could have been even better had he not missed two penalties.

His early displays are starting to catch the eye of potential suitors but the 25-year-old says his only focus is on keeping his form going and reaching his goal target.

“I am happy to have scored two goals but also a little bit disappointed to have missed two penalties,” Weghorst told NOS. “I am a perfectionist who demands a lot of himself and I had a mentality tonight that I am not leaving the pitch without scoring.

“I have set myself a target to score 20 goals this season and I believe that is a feasible target for an AZ Alkmaar striker and I am going to do all I can to achieve it.”
