Boro boss Southgate has made it clear he does not want Johnson to leave the club but with his way into the first team at Boro blocked by England winger Stewart Downing, he may be keen on a switch.
There is talk of a possible loan move for the player which may suit all parties concerned but Tottenham, Rangers and QPR are also keen on Johnson, who is under contract until 2010 and a product of Middlesbrough's renowned academy.
"Adam is a fantastic talent and I do not want to see him leave," Southgate recently told the Northern Echo. "Maybe I may have to find him a new position, I'll have to look at that. I know he can play on the right.
"If we alter how we play in the middle of the park that might help Adam and Stewart play together in the same team."
