Davies aiming to prove his worth

Everton's Tom Davies says last season is in the past and he must focus on impressing manager Ronald Koeman in this campaign.

England Under-21 international Davies enjoyed a fantastic breakthrough 2016/17 season, making 24 Premier League appearances and scoring two goals - those coming in the 4-2 win over Leicester City and the 4-0 thrashing of Manchester City.

However, despite receiving rave reviews for his performances, the 19-year-old midfielder has struggled to nail down a starting spot this term and only three league starts have been made.

Morgan Schneiderlin, Idrissa Gana Gueye and Mo Besic are all providing stiff competition whilst Republic of Ireland international James McCarthy is closing in on a return to full fitness to make life more difficult.

Davies is under no illusions to how hard it will be to get a regular starting place back but he insists he will be doing everything possible to get more minutes on the pitch.

"Last season is last season," he said. "The manager is focused on what is ahead – and that is like us. I do not think you get a place in the team off what you did last season. It is all about this season and proving yourself again.

"But it is a challenge you look forward to. I have reflected on last season with people close to me. We talked about that and we discussed what I needed to do this season and what it would be like.

"It is kind of tough to map it out because you do not know what is going to happen, but it is another test."
