How Yeovil have fared against Manchester United in previous FA Cup ties

FA Cup

Yeovil Town and Manchester United will meet in the fourth round of the FA Cup at the end of January.

The League Two side, now the lowest-ranked team remaining in the competition, will host United for the second time at Huish Park.

Here, Press Association Sport looks at previous meetings between the sides.

Yeovil Town 0-2 Manchester United, January 4 2015

United’s first ever visit to Yeovil Town, despite ending in victory, was one to forget with a lacklustre display from the Red Devils. For manager Louis Van Gaal, it was all about the result over performance, as with United sitting in third position in the Premier League, he was taking the FA Cup seriously. Yeovil, following their relegation from the Championship, were sitting five points from safety in League One. However, it was all to play for in the FA Cup and the side came close to scoring in the first half with a chance from Kieffer Moore. Yeovil matched their opposition until Ander Herrera scored with a 64th minute volley. Angel Di Maria, who was returning from a pelvis injury, made it 2-0. Yeovil ended the season relegated to League Two, while United were later knocked out of the FA Cup by Arsenal who went on to win the competition.

Manchester United 8-0 Yeovil Town, February 12 1949

After damage to Old Trafford caused by the Manchester Blitz, this fifth round tie took place at Maine Road. United’s attendance averaged 60,000, however an estimated 80,000 fans managed to fit into the stadium. In the previous round, Yeovil had beaten Sunderland in a shock 2-1 win, and were nicknamed ‘the giant killers’. Following their impressive win, Yeovil faced the defending champions, managed by Sir Matt Busby. United’s Jack Rowley, who was nicknamed ‘the gunner’ due to his impressive goal-scoring ability, scored five of United’s eight goals. In the build-up to his third goal, Yeovil’s goalkeeper Stan Hall suffered a bad injury to his abdomen and was forced to play on, with two goals from Ronnie Burke and one from Charlie Mitten completing the rout.

Manchester United 3-0 Yeovil Town, January 8 1938

The first meeting between the two clubs was at Old Trafford in the third round of the FA Cup 80 years ago. United were in the Second Division following their relegation the previous season. Yeovil were a non-league team under player-manager Dave Halliday, who had already been appointed the new Aberdeen manager and left Yeovil after the defeat. Goals from Harry Baird, Tommy Bamford and Stan Pearson saw United safely through to the next round. However, they were later knocked out of the competition in the fifth round by Brentford.
