Mooy aids Australia's progress

Aaron Mooy helped Australia reach a continental World Cup play-off as the Socceroos overcame a dogged Syria in Sydney.

The Terriers midfielder started on the bench but was introduced after just 10 minutes after Bournemouth utility man Brad Smith picked up a suspected hip injury.

Mooy was heavily involved in Australia's play and was a constant threat from set-pieces but it was ex-Everton and Millwall man Tim Cahill who proved to be his side's two-goal hero at the age of 37.

Australia's 2-1 win puts them through from the Asian play-off 3-2 on aggregate and they will next face a team from the North and Central America region, yet to be decided, over two legs in November for a place at Russia 2018.

Australian midfielder Mark Milligan said: "The next round will be a different match, we will have a different challenge on our hands."
