Caicedo ends Ecuador career

Lazio forward Felipe Caicedo has retired from international football for Ecuador following the decision to sack the national boss.

Ecuador are in serious danger of missing out on qualification for the 2018 World Cup in Russia with La Tricolor sitting eighth in the group, four points adrift of Peru in fourth with just two matches remaining.

Head coach Gustavo Quinteros was recently sacked due to the poor results and Caicedo, who has scored 22 times for his country, has now confirmed he has retired from international duty after the decision to axe the manager.

“I strongly disagree with the decision to sack Coach Quinteros,” he wrote on Twitter. “Although it’s true that the results haven’t been good, it’s not entirely his fault. We’re a team and that refers to the players and everything that surrounds us.

“The minimum is to allow this process to complete itself… I’d like to announce that I’ve ended my career with the national team. I want to thank the people that were always there for me.”
