McAuley ruled out for Ireland

West Brom boss Tony Pulis has confirmed Gareth McAuley won’t recover in time to play for Northern Ireland next month.

The 37-year-old still remains a key figure at the Hawthorns and on the international stage but he is currently nursing a thigh injury.

McAuley has been left out of West Brom’s squad for the season opener against Bournemouth and Pulis doesn’t think he will return to full fitness until September.

Northern Ireland are set to travel to San Marino on September 1 before hosting the Czech Republic three days later as they continue their push for a spot at the 2018 World Cup.

However, Pulis’ claims McAuley "won't be fit for a couple of weeks" and appears to have ruled the veteran defender out of contention for a place in Michael O’Neill’s squad.

Pulis said: "He's still struggling with his thigh so that's a problem for us."
