Rose and McCarthy pull out of Three Lions squad
Danny Rose and Alex McCarthy have withdrawn from England’s Nations League matches and have not been replaced.
England will take on Croatia on Friday before facing Spain on Monday and boss Gareth Southgate will have to cope without Spurs full-back Rose and Southampton keeper McCarthy.
The duo both had minor pre-existing injuries before linking up with the squad and have now returned to their respective clubs.
Leicester’s Ben Chilwell could be set for his first senior start now Rose has withdrawn, with the 21-year-old the only left-back in the squad.
Jordan Pickford, Marcus Bettinelli and Jack Butland are Southgate’s other options in goal.
England will face Croatia in an empty stadium as the World Cup finalists were hit by a UEFA sanction, and Pickford feels that could work in the Three Lions’ favour.
‘It is going to be very different,’ said England‘s first-choice stopper. ‘I played in Croatia last year for Everton in the Europa League and I know how hostile their fans are.
‘They are great for their teams so I think it gives us the upper hand going away from home and when they need their fans, they haven’t got them.’
