France 1-0 Peru
France booked their spot in the knockout stage of the World Cup thanks to Kylian Mbappe's first-half strike against Peru.
Didier Deschamps’ men had been criticised after they limped past Australia in their first match of the tournament on Saturday.
A 2-1 win had given them a lift and they went into Thursday’s clash as the heavy favourites against the South Americans.
Manchester United’s Paul Pogba and Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann both missed chances in the first half, but Peru failed to offer much at the other end of the park.
They were eventually punished in the 34th minute when Mbappe tapped home from close range. The Paris Saint-Germain man reacted quickest after Olivier Grioud’s shot took a deflection off a Peru defender.
However, Peru were unfortunate in the second half as they tried in vain to keep their World Cup hopes alive.
Pedro Aquino was inches away from an equaliser in the 51st minute as he let fly from 25 yards out. France goalkeeper Hugo Lloris looked worried but his shot smashed off the crossbar and behind for a goal kick.
Andre Carrillo followed suit 10 minutes later before then turning provider for Edison Flores, but his fellow winger missed from a tight angle after a well-weighted cross.
Despite their efforts, the South Americans eventually succumbed to defeat and head into their final game against Australia knowing they cannot progress from Group C.
