Barca dealt de Ligt blow

Barcelona's chances of signing Matthijs de Ligt have been dealt a blow as he looks set to remain with Ajax until the summer at least.

The Blaugrana are believed to be long-term admirers of teenager De Ligt, who only broke into the Ajax first-team last season and has already been capped twice by Holland at full international level.

Barca are hoping to make a move for the 18-year during the January transfer window but his agent, Barry Hulshoff, has dismissed the chances of that happening, as he believes his client will remain at the Amsterdam Arena until the end of the season at least.

"The intention is to stay at Ajax at least until summer," Hulshoff told Ziggo Sport. "He signed a new contract in Amsterdam in August 2017. He is fixed until the summer of 2021."

Barcelona are keen to bolster their defensive ranks, particularly as long-serving utility man Javier Mascherano is expected to leave the Camp Nou at the end of the season.
