Di Maria joined the French giants in 2015 from Manchester United on a four-year contract and was a first-team fixture in the first two seasons, making 58 Ligue 1 appearances and scoring 16 goals.
However, there were serious doubts over the Argentina international's future in the summer following the marquee signings of Brazilian Neymar from Barcelona and Frenchman Kylian Mbappe from Monaco.
Several reports had claimed the 29-year-old, who played for Real Madrid from 2010-2014, was being watched by the Catalans and Di Maria has now confirmed a deal was close.
Speaking to ESPN, as quoted by Football Espana, he said: "I was close and, at the same time, far away from reaching a deal with Barca. I never lost hope over the chance. I was calm about it, but it never happened.
"For sure, life takes many twists and turns and one never knows what the future might hold."
