Saint-Etienne coach Christophe Galtier felt his side deserved all three points from Sunday's 1-0 victory over Bastia.
Les Verts moved up to eighth in the Ligue 1 standings as Romain Hamouma netted an injury-time penalty to ensure the points stayed at Stade Geoffroy-Guichard.
It was a vital three points for the Loire-based outfit who had only one win to their name prior to the fixture and were lurking in the lower reaches of the table.
There is still a long way to go as they try to match last season's sixth-place finish and Galtier hailed the way his men never gave up.
"It was important to win. It would have been cruel on us not to have won," he said. "The team put in a complete display. I believed right until the end and the players did too.
"We had chances and their goalkeeper Jean-Louis Leca had a great game. Winning in the last few minutes is important and the bench we have means that people can come on and be decisive."
