Sanches urged to maintain form

Lille feel there is much more to come from Renato Sanches after he bagged the winner in Friday’s 2-1 victory over Montpellier.

The 22-year-old became the club’s record transfer when joining from Bayern Munich for 25million euros in the summer, but has yet to hit the heights at Stade Pierre-Mauroy.

He began the season with the Bavarians, making three appearances before moving to Ligue 1, and has now enjoyed nine outings for his new club.

The Portugal international struggled for game time at Bayern and spent the 2017-18 campaign on loan at Swansea City.

Two hamstring injuries ended his disappointing stint at the Liberty Stadium in January 2018, with then Swans boss Carlos Carvalhal suggesting the youngster had “much to learn”.

He made just 17 Bundesliga appearances last term although Lille opted to take a gamble on a player who, they felt, had bags of potential.

The former Benfica man scored his first goal for the French club with six minutes to go on Friday and Lille sporting director Luis Campos has urged the youngster to continue his upward curve.

“We need a high-performing Renato, but on the condition that this lasts,” he said. “He had a lot of stress and anxiety with this transfer and he has paid for that.

“We are going to help him to adapt and to respect the three things I talked about. In my opinion, Renato is currently playing at 40% of his potential.”

The win sees Lille in third spot in the Ligue 1 standings although teams below do have games in hand.
