Sakai handed new Marseille deal
Marseille defender Hiroki Sakai has penned a new contract with the club to the end of the 2021/22 season.
The Japanese international has been with the club since making the move from German Bundesliga side Hannover in 2016.
He joined on a free transfer following their relegation and has been a regular player in his three years since.
Sakai has played 121 times for the Stade Velodrome side and has netted twice in that time.
The 29-year-old played the full 90 minutes as Marseille reached the final of the 2018 Europa League, but they were beaten by Atletico Madrid.
He has not won anything domestically with Marseille but was part of the Japan squad that reached the final of the Asian Cup earlier this year.
Sakai has played all three Ligue 1 matches this season as Marseille have started with a loss, a draw and a win.
