Golovin felt Monaco the perfect fit

Monaco midfielder Aleksandr Golovin feels that moving to either Chelsea or Juventus last summer would have been a step too far.

The 23-year-old spent four years on the books at CSKA Moscow but the Russia international became the centre of attention after shining at the 2018 World Cup on home soil.

A number of clubs were linked to the attacking midfielder after his Russia exploits, with the Blues and Old Lady said to have shown more than a passing interest.

However, he chose to move to the relative obscurity of Monaco and made 30 Ligue 1 appearances in the 2018-2019 campaign.

The talented youngster has played four times this season, with Monaco 19th in the table, but has yet to score and believes that he made the correct decision to move to Stade Louis II.

He told Match TV: “Why didn’t I move to Juventus or Chelsea? I thought it would be hard for me now in a team like Chelsea or Juventus.

“For me it’s the grandees of football. Probably, if I were a football player from Europe, the transition would have been easier.”

It remains to be seen if Golovin does eventually end up at any of the European heavyweights but he feels that communication would always be an issue for him and he seems happy with the principality outfit.

“And, since I am from Russia, in a big club the situation would be complicated by the lack of knowledge of the language,” he added.
