Jardim hails Monaco spirit after big win

Leonardo Jardim is an Everton target.

Monaco coach Leonardo Jardim saluted the attitude of his Monaco players as they left it late to beat Rennes 3-2.

Monaco were in desperate need of all three points as they started the day in the relegation places of Lique 1 and they left it to the last moment to snatch the winner courtesy of Wissam Ben Yedder.

Ben Yedder had got proceedings off to the perfect start when giving his side an early lead, but goals from Faitout Maouassa and Adrian Hunou put Rennes in front.

Jardim’s men were back on terms when Islam Slimani equalised in the 56th minute before Ben Yedder grabbed the winner three minutes into added on time.

The win moved Monaco out of the relegation zone, much to the relief of Jardim.

“This is an important victory because we had to show something new after Montpellier,” he said after the game. “This brings us confidence and especially points that will allow us to go up the table.

“We found the right attitude that allowed us to raise our heads after the defeat in Montpellier. It is a positive and well-earned victory with regard to how the match played out.

“Our squad has shown that it is resourceful. Without Golovin, Gelson and Ballo-Touré, the team has responded, this is a very good thing for the squad.”

The win was a big one for Monaco, but another setback for Rennes, who have now failed to pick up a victory in nine matches in all competitions and have issues of their own.
