City coach Pep Guardiola once again had to discuss another Kompany injury in midweek after the Belgian suffered knee ligament damage.
The Belgian will now spend another six weeks on the sidelines and his future at the Etihad Stadium is in doubt after 18 months of constant issues.
Guardiola is said to be in the market for another defender in January and reports suggest Van Dijk is his main target.
The former Celtic man is comfortable on the ball and both Liverpool and Manchester United have shown an interest in recent weeks.
Van Dijk signed a five year-deal when he joined the Saints in 2015 but Guardiola will be hoping that the lure of Champions League football could help him during negotiations.
