Pep Guardiola is hopeful Manchester City have identified the root cause of captain Vincent Kompany's repeated injury problems.
Kompany, who played just 14 times last season, could make his return against Swansea in the EFL Cup on Wednesday, having been out of action since he damaged a thigh muscle in last season's Champions League semi-final second-leg with Real Madrid.
The City skipper has also been plagued with groin and calf issues over the past two years and Guardiola refused to rush back the Belgium defender until the club finally got to the bottom of his problems.
And now the 30-year-old has a chance to play against the Swans after repeated blood screenings by City's medical staff.
Guardiola said: "The last two years were so frustrating for Vincent and the club because of his injuries.
"Now we think we know the reason why it happened. It's much better. He trained a lot, he will be ready.
"He will be part of the group and other central defenders to win his position.
"We have a lot of games, so of course, we need him. I am so happy."
The City boss added: "The last game (against Bournemouth) was the first time he was on the bench this season. He will travel with us and we are going to decide whether he has the chance to play."
