The Argentina sensation is under contract with Barca until 2018 and although the Catalan giants have insisted a new deal has been verbally agreed, he has yet to put pen to paper which could leave the door open for City to swoop.
City boss Pep Guardiola knows Messi well from his time in charge of Barca and would love the opportunity to work with him again at the Etihad Stadium if a deal can be hammered out.
City are one of the few clubs who have the kind of finances to pull off such a deal, but even then a lot will have to fall in place for it to happen.
Even so, reports in the Spanish press say City are having 'serious conversations' over a swoop for arguably the greatest player that has ever lived, and Barca’s resolve could be tested in the not-too-distant future.
Messi has scored an astonishing 521 goals in almost 600 games overall for Barcelona and has already bagged 14 so far this season as he shows no signs of slowing down.
