The Northern Ireland international has become more of a key figure under the Scot this season, making 22 appearances and grabbing three goals.
Reports suggested that the players learned of Ferguson's retirement at a golf day, 24 hours before it was announced to the public.
However Evans revealed that this was not the case and the players were called into a meeting with the 71-year-old, who broke the news personally.
Evans said: "A lot was said about rumours flying around during our golf day but it wasn't really like that.
"We came in the next day, a meeting was called and the manager told us he was retiring.
"It was still a shock because no one saw it coming."
