Bastian Schweinsteiger may make his first appearance of the season on Wednesday after making the Manchester United bench this weekend.
The former Germany international had fallen way down the pecking order following Jose Mourinho's arrival as manager but he was an unused substitute on Sunday as United were held to a draw by West Ham at Old Trafford.
The Hammers visit Manchester again on Wednesday for an EFL Cup meeting and Schweinsteiger could be handed a rare chance due to injury and suspension concerns in midfield.
Michael Carrick is not expected to be risked due to a slight injury and both Paul Pogba and Marouane Fellaini are missing through suspension.
However, the 32-year-old is still being tipped to depart in either the January transfer window or at the end of the campaign and an MLS move seems to be the most likely option for the former Bayern Munich man, with Chicago Fire understood to be keen.
