United's Scandanavian fan club has admitted misquoting Sir Alex Ferguson over Dimitar Berbatov and blamed his Glaswegian accent.
The Norwegian-based supporters' branch is exonerating the United boss of any blame in the bitter row with Tottenham over the comments he reportedly made aboiut their £25million-rated striker Dimitar Berbatov.
The alleged quote, which was picked up by a UK tabloid, about Berbatov suggested he was destined to come to Old Trafford before the transfer window shuts and that time was on United's side, but they have now been revealed as inaccurate by MUSCSB webmaster Steinar Madsen.
"We are to blame for how the interview was presented. Ferguson didn't mention the name Berbatov when he was interviewed by us," he told a Norwegian newspaper.
"I would call it a misunderstanding. It was tricky conditions for the interview. As journalists, you have probably experienced this yourself, how it is to listen to the tape afterwards. That can cause problems and Ferguson's accent is not too easy to understand to start with.
"Ferguson confirmed that United had tabled an offer. We assumed it was Berbatov he was talking about. We might have taken it too far."
Ferguson may now avoid Premier league censure as Spurs' argument was largely based around this 'misquote', although the United manager's enemies will wonder why it has taken a week and a complaint from Tottenham for the inaccuracy to be acknowledged.
