United boss' Serie A talent search

Sir Alex Ferguson is believed to still be in Italy ahead of a potential talent scouting trip to see Simon Kjaer in action for Palermo.

The Reds boss, accompanied by assistant manager Mike Phelan, watched Champions League opponents AC Milan defeat Udinese 3-2 at the San Siro last night.

Ferguson is reportedly on the lookout for a centre-back as rumours gather pace that Nemanja Vidic is angling for a summer move to Spain, with Real Madrid now believed to be ahead of Barcelona in the chase.

The United manager spoke to Kjaer late last year at a function in Denmark and is believed to have seen scouting reports and DVDs of the 20-year-old, but is yet to get a good look at him in person.

Palermo face AS Roma in Serie A on Saturday afternoon with Ferguson prepared to delay his return to Manchester in order to check out the defender's progress.
