Manchester City v Chelsea – Match Preview
Manchester City will be looking for revenge when they welcome Chelsea to the Etihad in Sunday’s late game.
The Blues inflicted a 2-0 defeat on Pep Guardiola’s men back in December but failed to kick on. They head into the weekend fourth in the table and in danger of losing their Champions League spot to Manchester United.
City themselves had a wobble but went top of the standings thanks to Wednesday’s 2-0 win at Everton, albeit having played a game more than Liverpool, and the Reds will look to reclaim their spot on Saturday against Bournemouth. The champions have the Premier League’s best home record this season, winning 12 of their 13, and have scored 27 goals in their last five on their own patch.
Guardiola has confirmed that Benjamin Mendy and Vincent Kompany will again be missing, while Claudio Bravo is a long-term absentee.
Chelsea beat Huddersfield 5-0 last time out but had been crushed 4-0 at Bournemouth in their previous game.Maurizio Sarri may be able to call on defender Antonio Rudiger, who missed the win against the Terriers through a knee injury.
However, youngster Callum Hudson-Odoi will be absent due to a fever. The last three Premier League games between these two finished in a win to zero, while City also kept a clean sheet as they claimed the Community Shield against Sunday’s opponents in August. That success came at Wembley and the pair are set to return to the national stadium on February 24 for the EFL Cup Final.
A victory for the Blues would be a turn up for the books, with them winless in six Premier League away fixtures against established top-six rivals, losing each of the last four.
