Chelsea will be without Gonzalo Higuain for Thursday’s Europa League clash against Dynamo Kiev after he picked up an illness.
Chelsea‘s Argentine striker did not travel with the rest of the squad to Kiev as boss Maurizio Sarri ordered him to stay at home to rest and recover.
‘He had a fever after the league match [Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Wolves] for two days,’ explained Sarri.
‘On Tuesday evening with the doctor we decided to leave him at home in order to recover him for the next match.
‘ Elsewhere, Chelsea have no fresh injury concerns, but the same cannot be said of the Kiev pitch.
Sarri said he fears for the safety of his Chelsea players after branding the pitch ‘dangerous’ and a ‘disaster’.
Sarri’s squad trained at Kiev’s Olympic Stadium on Wednesday evening ahead of Thursday’s last-16 second leg.
Asked his thoughts on the pitch, the head coach replied: ‘A disaster.
The pitch is not good.
I think that it’s dangerous, really dangerous.
‘It’s really dangerous to play any football here in this moment, and I think it’s really very dangerous for injuries.
‘But the situation is this.
So we have to accept the situation.
‘I don’t know the reason – probably the winter.
I played here two years ago (with Napoli) and the pitch was wonderful.’
