Southampton play host to relegated Huddersfield Town at St Mary’s with little to play for in the final game of the season.

Ralph Hasenhuttl has successfully steered the Saints to safety since taking charge following Mark Hughes’ short-lived reign at the club.

The former Cologne and Greuther Furth coach’s introduction of a German style of high pressing has won many plaudits as Southampton managed to avoid a final-day showdown for survival.

Hasenhuttl also rejuvenated a number of players whose careers were stagnating, most notably Shane Long, who scored the fastest goal in Premier League history early last month away at Watford.

Younger players have been introduced to the team as well, including Josh Sims and Matt Targett, with Southampton now looking to try and finish as high as 15th this season – if other results go their way.

The Saints’ squad is virtually fully fit for the Huddersfield game, with only Maya Yoshida missing for the home side due to a virus.

For Huddersfield, the season has been a disaster from day one, with David Wagner, their most successful manager in recent years, leaving the club by mutual consent in January.

Town have been bottom since Boxing Day and rarely looked like threatening to stay up following the turn of the year.

Jan Siewert has only presided over one win in charge of the Terriers, though their performance in the 1-1 draw with Manchester United last weekend could give them some hope for the future.

The teams Siewert has put out so far have generally had an air of experimentation about them and that theme is set to continue against Southampton, as they look for just their second away win of the season and fourth in the top flight.

Joel Coleman is set to start in goal for the first time since January 2018, while Adama Diakhaby is also in line for selection.
