Manchester City’s quadruple dream remains intact after they beat Brighton 1-0 in the semi-finals of the FA Cup.

However, it was not plain-sailing for Pep Guardiola’s team, who rode their luck at the start of the second half before eventually confirming their place in the FA Cup final on May 18.

City could not have made a better start to the match as they took the lead after only four minutes, Gabriel Jesus heading Kevin De Bruyne’s superb cross into the bottom corner of the net.

The Seagulls could have let their heads drop but they responded well to the setback of conceding such an early goal, and Davy Propper drove a 20-yard shot wide before Kyle Walker was a little fortunate not to be sent off after he flicked his head towards Alireza Jahanbakhsh.

After the incident was referred to VAR, Walker escaped with a yellow card although Guardiola decided to substitute the former Tottenham man at half-time as he also appeared to be carrying a knock.

After a tight first 45 minutes, the match opened up at the start of the second period and Chris Hughton’s team almost snatched a shock equaliser in the 54th minute when Shane Duffy’s header was on its way to Glenn Murray, who seemed certain to score until Aymeric Laporte somehow managed to get back and hack the ball over his own bar.

City managed to survive the spell of Brighton pressure and Ilkay Gundogan’s dipping shot was saved by Mat Ryan, who then did extremely well to keep Raheem Sterling’s effort out.

Despite being far from their best, City did just enough to reach next month’s cup final and they can now turn their attention towards knocking Spurs out of the Champions League and overhauling Liverpool at the top of the Premier League table.
