Luka Milivojevic’s penalty proved decisive as Crystal Palace claimed a huge 1-0 victory at Newcastle on Saturday.

With the opportunity to pull further clear of the relegation zone, the clash between Newcastle and Crystal Palace was always likely to be a tight affair.

The Eagles have shown up well on their travels of late, losing just once in their last four games away from Selhurst Park, and they were on the front foot in the early stages at St James’ Park.

Some good possession eventually led to the opening chance of the game although Jeffrey Schlupp could only drag wide from the edge of the box.

Newcastle managed to get a grip on proceedings midway through the half and Salomon Rondon was handed two great chances to break the deadlock.

The Venezuelan headed over after latching on to DeAndre Yedlin’s drilled cross, while he also had one ruled out for offside after tapping in from close range.

Palace also had a goal chalked off in the closing minutes of the first period when James McArthur was deemed to be offside and blocking Martin Dubravka’s view as James Tomkins turned home.

It was a slow start to the second period but Newcastle still looked the most threatening as they attempted to force Palace on to the back foot.

Florian Lejeune had their first chance of the second half but failed to convert his header from close range, while Yedlin flashed one narrowly wide of the far post moments later.

Indeed, Yedlin’s miss was their 16th attempt of the game and Palace, who had just about managed to hang o,n inevitably went on to score against the run of play with just 10 minutes remaining.

Wilfried Zaha danced his way into Newcastle’s box and a clumsy challenge from Yedlin forced Stuart Attwell to point to the spot.

Milivojevic is a hugely reliable figure from 12 yards and made no mistake as he slammed home beyond Dubravka.

Newcastle were unable to respond and will hope their failure to convert doesn’t come back to bite them in the relegation battle.
