Phil Jagielka earned a late nod to start for Everton and scored an early goal as the home side bettered Arsenal.

The central defender only got his place in the line-up following Michael Keane’s withdrawal in the warm-up through illness and was on the spot to convert from close range after ten minutes as Arsenal failed to deal with a long throw into their six-yard box.

The visiting side enjoyed large spells of possession at times, but it remained Everton that looked more likely to add more goals, with Richarlison, Gylfi Sigurdsson and man of the match Dominic Calvert-Lewin all going close.

Arsenal‘s inability to keep a clean sheet away from home – they remain without one under Unai Emery – once more cost them as they slipped up and passed on the chance to go back above Spurs into third place.

Jagielka was thrust into early action as he cleared at the near post following a flowing counter-attack from Arsenal, with Alexandre Lacazette seeing his penalty claims waved away in the build-up.

Down the other end and from Lucas Digne’s long throw-in, Jagielka went up at the near post to challenge, ensuring the ball broke across goal and Calvert-Lewin attempted to divert it in.

His header instead found its way to Jagielka, who steered it home from four-yards out, unmarked.

Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang and Aaron Ramsey were summoned from the Gunners bench at half-time and the Welshman could have levelled within two minutes, side-footing a volley over the bar following a weak punch from Jordan Pickford.

Everton meanwhile continued to threaten, Sigurdsson twice having clear shooting chances from the edge of the box, while Richarlison also shanked a shot wide from 15 yards as Marco Silva’s outfit failed to make the points safe.

There was a late flare up on the sidelines between the two managers when Shkodran Mustafi sent Calvert-Lewin sprawling on the touchline, but the defender escaped with a caution.

It will be enough to see him serve a suspension, another hangover for Emery following a forgettable day at Goodison Park for his team.
