Paul Pogba twice scored from the penalty spot as Manchester United just about edged out West Ham 2-1 at Old Trafford.

The Hammers were aggrieved when Felipe Anderson had a goal chalked off early on for offside and Manuel Pellegrini was also bemused when barely a minute later United were awarded a soft spot-kick.

His side came out resurgent in the second half and deservedly levelled through Anderson before West Ham began to dominate proceedings.

They were hit with a sucker blow when Anthony Martial was felled in the box, Pogba confidently dispatching his second penalty of the evening to lift United above Arsenal into fifth spot.

West Ham will come away from Old Trafford wondering what might have been.

They made a bright start and looked to have taken the lead when Anderson converted from close range just beyond the quarter hour.

The offside flag went up although replays showed Diogo Dalot was playing the Brazilian onside.

Barely had West Ham got over that when Robert Snodgrass and Juan Mata had a coming together at the other end and Graham Scott pointed to the penalty spot.

Pogba smashed home the spot-kick, but replays once more supported the theory it was a soft award.

To their credit West Ham came out fighting in the second half and were soon level, Javier Hernandez making space in the box before finding Anderson with a low cross.

His finish was low and David de Gea couldn’t keep it out.

That gave Pellegrini’s team belief, and while Hernandez was aggrieved to be taken off with 17 minutes left, his replacement Michail Antonio caused havoc.

He rattled the crossbar with moments of coming on and then saw De Gea somehow claw a downward header out from under his crossbar.

Just as in the first half, near joy soon turned to misery for West Ham.

Martial raced through on goal from a quick United counter and was brought down by the retreating Ryan Fredericks, with no question about the penalty award this time.

Pogba was even more clinical from the spot, giving his side a precious success as United moved up to fifth place.
