Norwich 3-1 Newcastle
Finland international Teemu Pukki continued his excellent start to the season by scoring a hat-trick in Norwich City’s 3-1 win against Newcastle United.
The 29-year-old, who netted the Canaries’ consolation goal in the 4-1 defeat at Liverpool, was in blistering form at Carrow Road as Norwich secured their first Premier League victory of the campaign.
In the fifth minute Pukki burst clear of the Newcastle defence before playing in Todd Cantwell whose low shot was saved by Martin Dubravka.
When the visitors responded, Matt Ritchie’s cross found Emil Krafth at the back post but the right-back lashed his eight-yard shot over the bar.
Newcastle looked very fragile defensively and Pukki beat Fabian Schar far too easily before forcing Dubravka to make anything smart block.
Former Newcastle goalkeeper Tim Krul made a routine save to keep Ritchie’s weak 25-yard drive out before an unmarked Joelinton headed Isaac Hayden’s cross narrowly wide when he should have hit the target.
The impressive Pukki finally gave the Canaries the lead in the 32nd minute when he sent a volley past Dubravka after Jamaal Lascelles had been unable to head Emi Buendia’s cross away from danger.
Newcastle were on top at the start of the second half but they were made to pay for more defensive inadequacies just past the hour mark when Pukki managed to beat Dubravka at his near post after being set up by the excellent Cantwell.
Pukki completed his hat-trick with 15 minutes remaining after more good play by Cantwell. The Finn beat Ritchie before firing his shot past Dubravka and, although Jonjo Shelvey grabbed a consolation goal for the visitors in stoppage time, it was a deserved victory for Daniel Farke’s team.
