Wigan climbed, at least temporarily, out of the drop zone after drawing with Aston Villa at Villa Park
Both goals came in the first half. Charles N'Zogbia opened the scoring for the Latics, Ashley young equalising for the home side.
Wigan made the perfect start when N'Zogbia finished off a rapid counter attack, launched by the impressive Victor Moses, with a cool curling finish beyond the outstretched hand of Brad Friedel inside ten minutes.
However, the same old problems came back to bite Roberto Martinez's Latics as Antonin Alcaraz commited a clumsy foul on Ashley Young who dusted himself off to bend a free-kick into the back of the net just seven minutes later. Worse still for Wigan was that Young's free-kick wasn't exactly in the corner and goalkeeper Ali Al Habsi will feel he should have done much better.
There were few openings in a scrappy second half, although Wigan went within inches of stealing three very valuable points when Hugo Rodallega drove inches wide of the far post. However, it was Villa who had the best chance when Darren Bent found himself free as he drove towards the penalty box only to fluff his lines and allow Al Habsi to make a smothering stop.
The result all but confirms Villa's Premier League survival and lifts Wigan out of the relegation zone, for the time being, as Blackpool prepare to take on Tottenham at White Hart Lane this evening.
