Real Madrid have maintained their 100 percent start to the new season with a 2-0 triumph over Espanyol in Catalonia on Sunday.
The match struggled to get going in the opening exchanges, as both teams were forced into early substitutions, with Espanyol’s Pablo Piatti and Real’s Casemiro having to go off with respective injuries.
Sergio Ramos did miss a decent chance for Los Blancos, as he glanced a header wide of the target from a Luka Modric corner, while Leo Baptistao failed to capitalise on the host’s best chance of the first-half, although he did force Kiko Casilla into a smart save in the Real goal.
Real did have the ball in the back of the net in the 39th minute, but Karim Benzema was rightly flagged offside, but they did not have to wait long to take the lead, as James Rodriguez opened the scoring with a clinical low finish from outside the penalty area in first-half stoppage time.
Into the second-half and it remained a relatively even affair, although Real continued to create the better opportunities, with an acrobatic effort from Benzema forcing Diego Lopez into an instinctive save.
Benzema finally got his goal with 20 minutes remaining, as he clinically dispatched Lucas Vazquez’ cross to double Real’s advantage.
Espanyol refused to give up however, and substitute Felipe Caicedo’s deflected effort forced Casilla into a top-class save, but in truth the result never looked in doubt.
Real have now won a club-record 16 league games in a row, a run that stretches back to February, while Espanyol are yet to record a league win this season.
