Liverpool 2-2 Sevilla FC

Match Report

Liverpool had Joe Gomez sent off as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Sevilla in the Champions League Group E opener at Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp’s men were rocked by a very early goal from the Spanish La Liga outfit with Wissam Ben Yedder scoring in their first attack.

The Reds hit back impressively with Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah on target before the interval, while Firmino also missed a penalty three minutes before on half-time.

Liverpool were made to pay for that miss when Joaquin Correa snatched a point for Sevilla with 18 minutes remaining, while the hosts finished the game with ten men when Gomez was sent off in stoppage time.

Liverpool had a disastrous opening to the game when Sevilla opened the scoring with their first foray into the Reds’ half on five minutes.

Dejan Lovren failed to deal with Sergio Escudero’s cross into the area and the ball invitingly to Ben Yedder who made no mistake as he fired past Loris Karius from close range.

Georginio Wijnaldum went close to equalising within two minutes when he hit a curling effort from the edge of the area which deflected off a defender and dropped just wide of the far post.

A minute later and Sadio Mane appeared to be denied a clear penalty when Nico Pareja brought him down just inside the area, but the referee waved play on much to the Reds’ striker’s bemusement.

Liverpool continued to press for a goal with Mane seeing a first-time low strike saved by Sergio Rico, before Firmino saw his header drop just over the bar on 11 minutes.

The hosts finally got the goal their pressure warranted on 21 minutes when Alberto Moreno played a quick exchange of passes before teeing up Firmino inside the six-yard area and he made no mistake.

On 23 minutes Emre Can should have put Liverpool in front following a quick counter-attack, but the German rolled his effort wide from inside the area with just Rico to beat.

The Reds were rewarded with a second goal on 37 minutes when Salah outmuscled Steven N’Zonzi to win possession of the ball and his subsequent effort took a big deflection off Simon Kjaer on its way past Rico.

Firmino spurned a great opportunity to put the hosts 3-1 ahead at the interval when they were awarded a penalty after Pareja was guilty of a foul on Mane, but the Brazilian crashed his spot-kick off the post.

Liverpool took the game to Sevilla in search of a two-goal cushion and went close on 65 minutes when Salah turned in the area and hit a shot over the crossbar, before Wijnaldum’s snapshot was pushed wide of the post by Rico three minutes later.

The hosts’ missed chances came back to haunt them on 72 minutes when Sevilla got back on level terms.

Luis Muriel found Correa in a gap between two defenders just inside the area and he had time to initially miscontrol the ball before hitting his shot past Karius from 15 yards.

Philippe Coutinho was brought on for his first appearance of the season but the Brazilian failed to inspire Liverpool to find a winning goal, while the loss of Gomez for two bookable offences capped a frustrating night for Klopp.
