Paddy McNair was Sunderland's unlikely hero as David Moyes' side came from behind to beat QPR 2-1 in the EFL Cup.
The victory eases the pressure on the Black Cats boss who has seen his side fail to win any of their first five Premier League matches of the campaign.
It was another disjointed display by Sunderland although they did create the first chance of the match only for Joel Asoro to fire his shot wide.
In the 15th minute Duncan Watmore had a low shot saved by the fingertips of Matt Ingram in the QPR goal as the visitors started brightly.
The first half was a quiet affair though as both teams showed why they are struggling in their respective leagues although Niko Hamalainen did go close for the Championship side just before the interval.
At the start of the second half the home team enjoyed a dominant spell but Conor Washington's close-range header flashed wide before Abdenasser El Khayati failed to find the target with his left-footed effort.
Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink's side took the lead on the hour mark when Sandro fired a sweet shot home after Sunderland had failed to deal with a deep corner.
Moyes made three substitutions in the 69th minute and within 60 seconds his side had equalised when the lively Watmore set up McNair to find the net.
And ten minutes later the same player netted the winner from close range as Sunderland confirmed their place in the fourth round of the competition.
