Wigan Athletic 2-1 Newcastle United
Match Reports, Updated:
Two penalties and a sending off helped produce a Boxing Day cracker at the JJB, with Wigan eventually running out the winners.
Wigan took the lead in the 29th minute through a Ryan Taylor free kick. The midfielder was one of the stand out players in this match and his strike sailed over the Newcastle wall and into the top corner.
In the second half it was all Wigan, as the Magpies struggled to find their stride and in the 73rd minute the game was sealed through an Amir Zaki penalty. Emile Heskey showed great strength to hold off numerous fouls from Sebastien Bassong before being hauled down in the area.
Bassong was shown a straight red and Zaki made no mistake from the spot, coolly smashing his penalty into the bottom left hand corner.
That was not the end of the drama though as Newcastle won their own penalty late on, Chris Kirkland pushing substitute Andy Carroll. With Michael Own and Mark Viduka already subbed, Danny Guthrie stepped up and rifled the ball into the roof of the net.
Newcastle almost completed the comeback in injury time as the ball fell to Damien Duff, but the Irishman inexplicably blazed over from six yards and the points went to Wigan.
