Reports in Poland, where Gutkovskis plays his club football, claim Middlesbrough scouts have been over to follow his progress as he begins his first full season in the Ekstraklasa.
The 21-year-old has scored five goals in 11 starts and one substitute appearance for Nieciecza, an unfashionable club who are one point off the top of the table.
He was a prolific scorer for his previous club Skonto Riga, where he earned the comparisons to Everton and Belgium hitman Romelu Lukaku.
Gutkovskis scored 38 top-flight goals in 52 starts in his final season and a half in Latvian football, before making the switch to Poland.
He recently earned his first call-up to the senior Latvia squad for their World Cup qualifying matches against Faroe Islands and Hungary.
