Pardew has high hopes for Magpies
Alan Pardew says Newcastle should not give up hope of a top-four finish in the future, but insists they have to build a deep squad.
With the likes of Manchester City and Tottenham spending millions on new signings, the chances of securing Champions League football appear to be getting slimmer for the other clubs.
Having enjoyed great European nights in the past under Kevin Keegan, Newcastle fans dream of another chance of playing in club football's top competition.
Pardew also has similar aspirations but feels it will take time, with some shrewd moves in the transfer market and several top youngsters coming through the ranks.
When asked about the top four, the Magpies boss said: "That's where my focus is. One day here, I'd like to be competing with that top group of teams. At the moment, we can't because we haven't got a squad with anything like the depth that they have.
"If we're not going to be in that financial bracket, we have to go about things a different way. We have to be more calculated in terms of making sure our young players here are developed and guaranteeing we make no mistakes in the transfer market."
