Pardew sets sights on striker

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew is targeting a striker during the winter transfer window.

Much of the speculation surrounding the Magpies' plans this month has centred around the potential need to replace key midfielder Yohan Cabaye should one of his admirers produce a bid which tempts owner Mike Ashley to sell.

However, Pardew sees reinforcement of his pool of frontmen as a priority with leading scorer Loic Remy only on loan from QPR for the season and Shola Ameobi's contract due to expire at the end of the season.

That would leave Senegal international Papiss Cisse as the club's only specialist striker, and he has been out of goalscoring touch in recent months.

Asked if he had specific areas of the squad in mind during the transfer window, the 52-year-old said: "I do think in the striker department is an area we could possibly look at because Shola's contract ends, Remy is not our player and that leaves Papiss on his own, really.

"We should have more than that, so that's an area I am looking at."

Newcastle are understood to have several targets in mind and have once again been linked with former Magpie Demba Ba, who is currently on the periphery at Chelsea once again.

However, Pardew was playing his cards close to his chest as he waited for director of football Joe Kinnear to strike a blow.

He said: "All I do know is we are financially in a good position. I have said already that we will be strategic in our transfer dealings, and that's what we are going to do."
