The 24-year-old has spent the past three seasons at St James' Park and has been deployed as an attacking midfielder and an out-and-out striker at times, netting 25 goals from 114 appearances in all competitions.
However, he was mainly used as a 'number 10' by Rafa Benitez last term to provide support to the main striker, as the Magpies won the Championship to return to the top flight.
The former Spain Under-21 ace is one of the best finishers at the club and scored in last Sunday's 2-0 win over Hellas Verona.
He is now waiting to hear where the Spanish tactician will send him out against Tottenham in the season-opener on Sunday but is happy to play anywhere required.
"I can do both positions - as a No 10 or a striker," he said. "I feel comfortable in any of them. If the gaffer needs me as a striker, I can do that job. I felt really, really good against Verona.
"He will make his decision, and I will adapt myself to any position."
