Toon star eyes career-long stay
Joey Barton has laughed off talk of a move to West Ham and says he is willing to spend the rest of his career at Newcastle.
The 28-year-old has been one of the Magpies stand-out players this season and before he left the club Chris Hughton was even suggesting the former Manchester City midfielder should get an England call-up.
Barton has just entered the final 18-months off his current contract with Newcastle and with no sign of a new deal speculation had suggested he could be moved on, with West Ham believed to be leading the chase.
However, Barton has rubbished talk he will be joining West Ham in January and says he is instead focused on getting his future at St James' Park sorted out.
"I was actually laughing about it this morning, saying I thought £1.5m was a little bit cheap and, if I was them, I would ask for more," said the midfielder. "We had a good giggle about it.
"People write what they write, it is silly season. I have always gone on record about the affinity I have with the fans at this football club, and the football club and my fellow players.
"I have been on record as saying I want to stay here for the rest of my career. Nothing has happened and no one has told me otherwise, and as far as I'm concerned, that's what's going to happen."
