Fernandinho has told Pep Guardiola he doesn’t require to rest despite the Manchester City boss saying otherwise.

The 33-year-old Brazil midfielder has been a virtual ever-present this season and played every minute of the last four games – proving how indispensable he is towards the Citizens’ attempts to retain the Premier League trophy they won last season in record-breaking fashion.

Fernandinho is expected again to be the midfield fulcrum when City face Chelsea this Saturday tea-time at Stamford Bridge, with the Etihad outfit still unbeaten in the league this term.

City insiders have admitted manager Guardiola has in recent days held a dialogue with Fernandinho and would love to give his man a rest, going into the congested festive programme.

The samba ace, however, has reiterated his desire to keep on playing and has also felt better for not being called up by his country in recent weeks.

Guardiola said last week his veteran will be ‘killed’ for next season if he is unable to give his man a suitable rest, with the Manchester giants linked to making a January bid for Ajax starlet Frenkie De Jong, widely seen at City as an ideal long-term successor to Fernandinho’s crucial role in their engine room.
