Edinson Cavani is being linked with a new year move away from Paris Saint Germain, with Spain a potential destination.

The Uruguayan international has spent the last five years at the Parc des Princes and it was thought he would move on when Neymar joined the club in the summer of 2017. But even after the arrival of Kylian Mbappe from Monaco, Cavani decided to stay and helped PSG collect yet another Ligue 1 title last season.

It could be the January window sees the end of the 31-year-old’s spell in the French capital, with La Liga giants Atletico Madrid understood to be keen to sign the forward.

Those lining up a bet and using the Bet Calculator will note that the lure of working under Diego Simone could be a key factor in Cavani’s future decision.

Outsiders may look at Atletico and wonder why they would want to bring in another attacking player, with the likes of Antoine Griezmann, Nikola Kalinic, Angel Correa and Diego Costa in their ranks.

But there are suggestions that former Chelsea man Costa might move to the Chinese Super League, after a disappointing first half of the La Liga campaign.

The Spanish international has scored just one goal in 11 league games this term and Atletico have scored 21 goals in 15 games – 20 less than leaders Barcelona.

There’s no doubt that Cavani would add a bit more thrust to a very solid Atletico side and a new challenge may appeal to the Uruguayan – who has spent all his club career in France and Italy.

The 31-year-old has around 18 months remaining on his current PSG contract, but it’s believed the Ligue 1 leaders would consider allowing him to leave if the price is right.

Ironically, Paris Saint Germain could face Atletico Madrid in the knockout stages of the Champions League – with the draw taking place on Monday.

PSG topped Group C after a 3-1 away win at Red Star Belgrade on Tuesday, while Atletico finished second in Group A behind the impressive Borussia Dortmund.

Their final group match, a 0-0 draw in Brugge, again highlighted the need for more attacking firepower if they are going to challenge for top honours this season.

Atletico are currently third in La Liga, three points behind leaders Barca, ahead of this weekend’s fixtures. Simeone’s men travel to face mid-table Real Valladolid on Saturday afternoon.
