Burton duo agree new deals
Lucas Akins and Marcus Harness have signed new contracts with Burton, the Sky Bet League One club have announced.
Forward Akins has agreed a deal until the summer of 2021, while winger Harness has signed up until the end of the 2019-20 campaign.
Brewers boss Nigel Clough believes the club’s run to the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup, where they trail holders Manchester City 9-0 after the first leg, was crucial to securing Akins to a longer deal.
‘It’s brilliant to have secured Lucas, which is very positive news for us,’ Clough told Albion’s website.
‘I’m not sure we would have been able to keep him without the Carabao Cup run but the chairman has agreed to invest a little bit of that money in securing him.
‘If we had a few quid to go and replace Lucas we wouldn’t know where to start in terms of buying somebody.
‘He has been as responsible as anyone for the success the club has had in the last five years. He will go down as one of the best signings this club has ever made.’
On Harness, who scored his first league goals for Burton last weekend as he bagged a hat-trick in the 4-0 rout of Rochdale, Clough added: ‘This has been going on a for a few weeks trying to sort him a new deal, not just since Rochdale. He’s been hard to judge as he hasn’t had a run before.
‘He has now had a run in the team and he has shown more than enough to suggest he can make the position his own in the future.’
